So after an entire YEAR of promising to take him to see fireworks (We hadn’t taken him in previous years, due to age concerns, bad planning on our part , or as with last year, bad timing ), we head to the show in Needham. We get to the high school field where they will be, & we are all excited about the show! We go find ourselves “the perfect location” on the field & relax…We have 15 minutes to go….Suddenly one lone firework launches & explodes above us…Jonathan instinctively shoves his fingers into his ears, but at the same time a child like grin forms, and we know that he’s hooked. At the 10 Minute mark, another single shot goes off… we realize that they are marking the 5 minute intervals to the show… “When are we going to see more fireworks?” he asks… “Soon” we re-assure him. Of course, we repeat this exact same questioning, at the “5 minute warning”. Finally the fireworks start going…. At first he huddles next to me, staring, unblinking into the sky. A moment or two later he proudly tells us in child-like bravado, “I’m not covering my ears any more!”. Shortly there after, he lays back on the towels we had set out, practically squirming with delight & grinning from ear to ear. The "firsts" don't come as often as they used to, so this immediately brings tears of joy to my eyes as he is mesmerized by the show above him. He points out some of his favorites that are going off, “Oh that one sounds like marbles together!!”, still smiling & enjoying the show…As the show continues, we see that being well past his normal bed-time is catching up with him, but there’s no tearing him away… In the multi-colored glow, we can see his half-closed, dreamy eyed look, directed up at the sky, loving every minute of it, knowing that this was exactly what we had hoped would happen. After the show was over, we made it back to the car, with him re-assuring us that he wasn’t tired at all. Needless to say, he was asleep in the car, in 30 seconds flat (with a smile on his face). A Perfect evening!
